First Investigation of Sediment Composition and Contamination in the Faanu Mudugau Blue Hole

The Faanu Mudugau Blue Hole, the only known blue hole in the Indian Ocean, has been studied for the first time through a scientific analysis of its bottom sediments. The study assessed grain size distribution, organic and inorganic matter content, levels of contaminating elements (including mercury, arsenic, and cadmium), and the potential presence of microplastics. Results revealed elevated concentrations of heavy metals in certain sediment layers. While no plastic polymers were found, fibers containing artificial dyes or additives were identified. These findings suggest that even remote and seemingly pristine environments like this may be affected by human activities and tourism. The study provides a valuable baseline for future environmental monitoring in the Maldivian archipelago.
